The campaign group against Bath's controversial LTNs recently posted the following update on a local Bath Facebook page:
We have received a response from BANES, and they have rejected our solicitor’s letter and intend to continue with making the LTN permanent.
These moves start next week with the following schedule:
24/06/25 – Notice of Intent to be advertised
03/07/25 – 21 Day Public Consultation
16/09/25 – Final Notice to be advertised
25/09/25 – Final Notice published and objectors notified
01/10/25 – Operative (ETRO expires 1/10/25)
Despite the success of the West Dulwich case against Lambeth, we expected this from a council that has been determined to make New Sydney Place an LTN since 2022 when they quietly declassified that leg of the A36 and Kevin Guy promised it to the residents in his infamous “Dear Chrissie” letter.
They have made a sham of any consultation to date and no doubt will continue to do so in the next and final round. You may indeed wonder why they are consulting at all, having made the decision to proceed earlier in the year. This is because they messed up the implementation of the Experimental Traffic Regulation Order by publishing an inadequate “Statement of Reasons” justifying the scheme. They therefore need to implement a permanent TRO as if the ETRO never happened, and this requires another round of “consultation”, with BANES going through the motions.
So what are our options? Well, we need to muster continued opposition in the consultation, and I’ll be publishing a group objection that we can get as many people to sign up to as possible.
We also need to prepare to go to court, and in order to do that we need to raise at least £50k to mount a challenge. Our first step, subject to funds, will be to consult the barrister, Charles Streeten, who was successful in the West Dulwich action, to test the strength of our case.
